The Perfection Trap

Let me begin by saying: it’s a myth. No one is perfect, of that, I am certain. We sometimes live in a bubble, hoping we’ll find out differently. We wish for people to not disappoint us, we hope to be understood, and we do our best to be…perfect.

Our society focuses on hiding all of the blemishes. As women, we’re taught from a young age to hide our flaws. We watch our mothers talk about their body like it’s a liability, instead of the work of art it is. We see a society that praises people so skinny all you can see are their bones, and yet, we aspire to be that. We poke and scrutinize our own faces and freak out at the first sign of a wrinkle, instead of appreciating that we are growing into our womanhood.

Ladies – when did we get this idea that perfection was the standard, let alone, attainable? We know deep in our hearts that no one is perfect and quite frankly, that’s what makes us lovable. Our flaws and imperfections are what make us unique.

So while it’s okay to put makeup on before going to work and good to go to the gym to stay healthy, may we never strive for an unattainable goal that will only do two things: It will make us miserable and perfection will make us her slave.

Instead, let’s celebrate the characteristics that make us unique, instead of trying to hide them.

You are the only one in the world who can be YOU. Stop trying to fit in when you were born to stand out.

  1. Love that quote. I try to instill that in my kids each day to be the unique them that there is only one of. Sometimes it is hard to go the road less traveled but it truly is more rewarding!

  3. Perfection is something that is held to a standard that we think is normal. We need to celebrate those imperfections more.

  4. We were all born of imperfection. This is why I don’t understand how people strive on being perfect instead of embracing some of their imperfections. – HilLesha

  5. I love this! I need to share it with my middle school girls as they often fall into the trap. They are constantly comparing themselves to others and not living authentically. Great post.
