Making Their Voice Heard

Screen shot 2015-09-23 at 1.40.32 PMShe’d been with us just shy of 4 weeks when we got the call. It was time.

The judge had ruled it was time for her to be reunited with her family. It was unexpected and much quicker than we anticipated. When I heard the news, it took a moment for it to set in.

The mixture of emotions is so difficult to articulate. I’m sad to see her go, hopeful that the judge made the right judgement call in placing her back with family, but ultimately, I feel like I missed out.

You see, when she came to us, she didn’t say much. She knew exactly what we were saying and could obey basic requests like “Clean up your toys please” or “Please put that in the garbage.” But aside from shoes, juice, and no, she rarely spoke. Last night, we turned a corner.

She began to speak.

She said our names, counted from 1-5, was saying “what is that” and repeating back to us the name of the item she pointed at. We were stunned. She was blossoming and we had the opportunity to witness it.

It’s moments like those that make me wish we had just a little longer with her. She was doing so well! And I can only pray and hope that she continues to do this well, if not better, once reunited with her family.

Last night was a blessing, for it was a glimpse into her future and a reminder that we played a part.
